The Recorder of Deeds is the custodian of the records and indexes relating to the conveyance of land or the transfer of real property in the county. These include deed books and indexes, mortgage books and indexes, subdivision plans, charters, and various types of maps. This officer also records the commissions and oaths of county officials, district justices and notaries as well as maintaining copies of military discharges and numerous miscellaneous documents. This office is one of the oldest in Lancaster beginning with formation of the County in 1729. One person originally served as the Recorder of Deeds, Register of Wills, Clerk of the Orphan's Court, Clerk of Quarter Sessions Court, and Prothonotary until 1776 when the office of Prothonotary and Quarter Sessions were separated. It was not until 1839 that all of the former offices came under separate individuals. In 1977, the Recorder's Office moved from the basement of the 1920s courthouse addition to the 1975 addition of the courthouse. In 2010, the Recorder's Office moved to its current location at 150 North Queen Street. |
